We continue our digital chapter in the age of COVID-19. NYsoundCircuit 8.2: “How this has to be told” will feature members of RESONANT REFRACTIONS performing from their own creative domains directly to the screen of your choice. The sounds of composers Ian CLARKE, John CORIGLIANO, JacobTV, and Alex MINCEK will be interspersed with the poignant narrative photography of filmmaker & visual artist MARTHA NARANJO SANDOVAL. This event is free, but NYsC will accept donations of any amount during the show which will go toward the artists (www.nysoundcircuit.com/support). The Sounds: The active and explorative percussionist ADAM BEARD performs Alex Mincek's excitingly untraditional work for solo marimba “V”, in which the representation of that letter pervades the physical actions required by the performer to realize them through clever musical gestures creating a beautifully austere soundscape that is unexpected from the instrument. Modeled on American fiddling where the player must detune the strings and periodically stomp their foot along with the music, “STOMP” by John Corigliano will be brought to you by our accomplished violinist, RUSSELL KOTCHER. Ardent contemporary clarinetist EMMALIE TELLO performs "The Garden of Love" by JacobTV, a piece initially composed for oboe and based on a poem by William Blake, in which the clarinet is accompanied by a quirky but relentless soundtrack consisting of spoken word, samples from oboes, harpsichord, birds, electronic strings, and percussion. And passionate flutist JACKIE TRAISH performs impressive storytelling works by Ian Clarke, “Hypnosis” & “Beverley”, which showcase the range and expansive techniques of the flute.

The Visuals: The New York-based filmmaker & visual artist from Mexico City, MARTHA NARANJO SANDOVAL whose work focuses on the difference between how time is portrayed in moving and still image presents “How this has to be told”, from which NYsoundCircuit 8.2 takes its title. “How this has to be told” is a 35mm slideshow where the artist asked a number of people to talk about pictures from her family album as if they were theirs. The piece features the photographs with these narrations.

Resonant Refractions is the resident sinfonietta of NYsoundCircuit under the direction of Ian Shafer. Members of RR on this performance are Jackie Traish, flute; Emmalie Tello, clarinet; Adam Beard, percussion; and Russell Kotcher, violin.
